Anduril vs Rheinmetall

The US software-defined challenger against the European defence prime: autonomous interceptors and electronic warfare tied by Lattice, versus gun-based mobile air defence built at industrial scale.

Anduril and Rheinmetall are rarely named in the same sentence, because they sit in different countries, different markets, and different eras of the defence industry. They meet on one question that now matters to every army: how do you shoot down cheap drones at scale. Anduril is the Costa Mesa insurgent, private and valued near $60 billion, that builds autonomous kinetic interceptors and electronic warfare and ties them together with the Lattice command-and-control software. Rheinmetall is the Düsseldorf prime, founded in 1889 and listed on the Frankfurt exchange with about €9.9 billion of 2025 revenue, whose gun-based Skyranger air-defence turret has become Germany's chosen answer to the drone threat. One sells software-defined autonomy into US procurement; the other sells a proven cannon into European programmes of record. The comparison is less about which is better and more about two philosophies of counter-drone that are converging on the same battlefield problem.

TWO DEFINITIONS OF COUNTER-DRONE

Anduril and Rheinmetall answer the counter-drone question with opposite engineering instincts. Anduril's counter-UAS line is software first: the Lattice command-and-control mesh fuses sensors and directs a mix of effects, from Pulsar electronic warfare to the autonomous Anvil kinetic interceptor and the reusable, twin-turbojet Roadrunner-M, which can launch on a cue, defeat a target, and return to base if the engagement is called off. The company sells this as a networked system a US force integrates and updates like software, and it has the programme traction to match, with a $642 million US Marine Corps installation counter-UAS award in 2025 and a $20 billion US Army contract vehicle for Lattice integration in 2026.

Rheinmetall starts from the gun. The Skyranger 30 mounts a 30mm KCE-ABM revolving cannon firing AHEAD programmable airburst ammunition on a Boxer wheeled chassis, a hard-kill effector designed to put a cloud of sub-projectiles in front of a drone, a helicopter, or a low-flying aircraft. The logic is cost and magazine depth: against a saturating raid of cheap drones, an airburst round is far cheaper than an interceptor fired at every target, and a vehicle-mounted cannon keeps firing. This is the mobile short-range air defence Germany let atrophy after the Cold War and is now rebuilding, with a €595 million order for the first Skyranger 30 turrets in 2024 and an expected framework worth €6 to €8 billion behind it.

TWO PROCUREMENT WORLDS, AND AN INVERTED MAP

The usual Silicon Valley versus incumbent framing inverts here. The US challenger, Anduril, is the private company, funded on roughly $6.9 billion of venture capital and valued near $60 billion, selling company-developed systems into US non-traditional acquisition as commercial off-the-shelf kit. The European prime, Rheinmetall, is the listed DAX constituent founded in 1889, with about €9.9 billion of 2025 revenue, selling into European government programmes of record and NATO logistics chains. One moves at software cadence and prices itself on autonomy and integration; the other moves at procurement-cycle cadence and prices itself on industrial scale and proven ordnance.

Drone Intelligence assessment: on the specific question of autonomous, software-defined interceptors for contested environments, Anduril leads, because its whole stack is built around networked autonomy and it is winning the US programmes that fund it. Rheinmetall leads a different race, the mobile gun-based air defence that European armies are now buying by the hundred to counter mass drone attack affordably. The two are more layered than rival: a mature architecture pairs cheap airburst guns for the saturating baseline with networked interceptors and electronic warfare for the harder profiles. The buyer's real choice is set by procurement world and threat model, US software-defined autonomy against a European industrial air-defence standard, rather than by a single better product.

When To Choose

Choose Anduril Industries if:

  • Autonomous, networked interceptors and electronic warfare under one command-and-control layer
  • US or allied procurement wanting software-defined, company-developed counter-UAS
  • Layered defeat of Group 1 and Group 2 drones with reusable interceptors and EW

Choose Rheinmetall if:

  • Mobile gun-based short-range air defence integrated on armoured vehicles
  • European government procurement and NATO-standard logistics and ammunition
  • Low cost per engagement against saturating raids of cheap drones
