Drone Intelligence Assessment

Rheinmetall is Germany's largest defence prime and, since 2022, the principal industrial beneficiary of European rearmament. Founded in Düsseldorf in 1889, it is a listed DAX company (FWB: RHM) whose revenue reached roughly €9.9 billion in 2025, up about 29 percent year on year. Its relevance to the drone question sits in one part of the group: air defence, where the gun-based Skyranger and Skynex families have become a NATO reference answer to the low-cost drone threat.

The Skyranger 30 is the platform. It mounts a 30mm KCE-ABM revolving cannon firing AHEAD programmable airburst ammunition on a Boxer wheeled chassis, and Germany ordered it in February 2024 in a €595 million contract for a demonstrator and 18 series turrets, with the first vehicle handed over in early 2025. The strategic signal is the follow-on: Rheinmetall expects a framework order worth €6 to €8 billion for a significant number of systems, reported at 500 to 600 units delivered through 2035, which would make Skyranger the backbone of German and allied short-range air defence. Skynex and Skyranger 35 deliveries to Ukraine have added combat context.

Drone Intelligence assessment: Rheinmetall's counter-drone thesis is deliberately unfashionable. Against a swarm of cheap drones, a proven airburst gun with deep magazines and a low cost per round is more affordable to operate than an interceptor fired at every target. The binding constraint is not technology or capital but throughput and integration, because the Skyranger order book now depends on delivering hundreds of turrets on schedule while the wider group scales across armour, ammunition, and vehicles at the same time. Whether Skyranger becomes the European standard rests on converting the expected framework into signed execution contracts.
