Anduril vs Palantir

Two Silicon Valley defence insurgents that meet at the software layer: a vertically integrated hardware and autonomy company against a pure software and data-analytics platform.

Anduril and Palantir are the two companies most often named when the conversation turns to Silicon Valley reshaping defence, and they are frequently treated as direct rivals because both sell software that fuses sensor data into a common operating picture. The comparison holds at that layer and breaks everywhere else. Palantir is a public company, with a market capitalisation of approximately $427 billion (18 September 2026) and audited fiscal 2025 revenue of $4.475 billion, that builds software and only software, most visibly the Maven Smart System that the Pentagon designated a program of record in March 2026. Anduril is private, valued at $61 billion after a $5 billion Series H, and builds hardware, autonomous systems, and the Lattice software that ties them together, with $2.2 billion of 2025 revenue and a $20 billion US Army IDIQ vehicle awarded in March 2026. One sells the decision layer; the other sells the decision layer plus the aircraft, vehicles, and effectors beneath it.

WHERE THEY OVERLAP, AND WHERE THEY DO NOT

The genuine overlap is the command-and-control and data-fusion layer. Palantir's Maven and Anduril's Lattice both take feeds from many sensors and present operators with a single actionable picture, and both have won marquee endorsements for it, Maven as a program of record and Lattice as the backbone of Anduril's Army and Indo-Pacific work. A buyer choosing a software backbone for an existing sensor and effector estate could legitimately evaluate the two against each other.

Everywhere else the companies diverge by design. Palantir builds no hardware and intends to build none; its leverage is that it integrates with everyone's hardware and is therefore present across far more programmes than it manufactures. Anduril builds the physical systems as well, from the Fury collaborative combat aircraft to loitering munitions and counter-UAS effectors, and sells Lattice as the connective tissue for its own kit first. The strategic bet is opposite: Palantir wins by being the neutral software layer above all hardware; Anduril wins by owning the stack from sensor to shooter.

PUBLIC SCALE VERSUS PRIVATE HYPERGROWTH

The financial profiles encode the difference. Palantir's roughly $427 billion market capitalisation on $4.475 billion of fiscal 2025 revenue prices it as a software compounder with a price-to-sales ratio near 100, a valuation that assumes the analytics platform keeps expanding across government and commercial accounts. Anduril's $61 billion private valuation on $2.2 billion of 2025 revenue prices a different thesis: that a vertically integrated hardware-plus-software prime can take share from the legacy defence majors at venture speed.

Drone Intelligence assessment: the two are more often complementary than competitive on a given programme, because a force can run Maven as its analytics layer and field Anduril hardware beneath it. The real contest is over the same defence budget and the same pool of software-defined-warfare mindshare, and the meaningful question for a buyer is whether the requirement is a neutral software layer that touches everything, which favours Palantir, or an integrated system where the software and the hardware are bought together, which favours Anduril.

A THIRD LAYER: WHERE SHIELD AI FITS

Neither Anduril nor Palantir is the only company worth reading against the other's stack position. Shield AI's Hivemind occupies a third, narrower layer: autonomy software that flies an aircraft on board rather than commanding a fleet from above it or fusing intelligence data for a human. Maven is not named in the Collaborative Combat Aircraft programme record where Shield AI competes, so the two companies do not appear to overlap there, but Shield AI sits directly alongside Anduril in that programme's mission-autonomy contest, due to be decided in 2027. Drone Intelligence's Signal Dossier on all three companies is linked below.

When To Choose

Choose Anduril Industries if:

  • An integrated stack where autonomy software and hardware are procured together
  • Collaborative combat aircraft, loitering munitions, or counter-UAS effectors
  • A vertically integrated alternative to the legacy defence primes

Choose Palantir Technologies if:

  • A neutral software and analytics layer above existing multi-vendor hardware
  • Enterprise-scale data fusion across government or commercial estates
  • A publicly traded vendor with transparent financials and a proven program of record
