On this page's reading, the CAGR gap between the two figures, greater than 20% against 13.5%, is a segmentation and methodology difference rather than a disagreement about demand: Mordor segments by drone technology (multi-rotor, fixed-wing, others), while Fortune Business Insights segments by application share, expecting the energy and power segment to hold 41.77% of the market in 2026, lightweight drones 52.23%, rotary-wing platforms 67.31% and power-line inspection specifically 37.07%. Neither source states the cause of the gap.

MARKET STRUCTURE
Mordor's three-way technology segmentation, multi-rotor, fixed-wing and others, sits alongside an applications split between power generation (renewable and non-renewable) and power distribution and transmission. It states that fixed-wing drones are gaining prominence for extensive power-line inspection because of their energy efficiency, longer range and heavier payload capacity relative to multi-rotor platforms. Fortune Business Insights' 2026 application-share figures point a different way on airframe type: it expects rotary-wing drones to hold 67.31% share in 2026 against multi-rotor's implied smaller remainder, with power-line inspection specifically at 37.07% of application share. The two figures are not necessarily in tension, gaining prominence within a category is compatible with that category still holding a minority of overall share, but neither source states how the two claims reconcile, so this page does not resolve it.
Fortune Business Insights' other 2026 application shares, energy and power at 41.77% and lightweight drones at 52.23%, describe a market still weighted toward smaller platforms doing routine inspection work rather than heavy-lift or beyond-line-of-sight-only operations, on the figures as published.
AUTONOMOUS AND BVLOS DEPLOYMENT
National Grid announced on 4 September 2025 what it describes as the world's first centralised, autonomous aerial inspection capability for electricity infrastructure, deploying sees.ai's technology to fly drones Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) close to live power infrastructure across its transmission network in England and Wales, piloted from a central control room. The rollout followed what the release calls a four-year innovation programme moving from trials to business-as-usual operations, and builds on the UK Civil Aviation Authority's October 2024 policy concept, which the release says enabled BVLOS flight at low heights close to infrastructure where there is little or no potential for other aircraft to be operating.
RWE, working with Danish drone company Quali Drone and partners including Statkraft, TotalEnergies, DTU and Energy Cluster Denmark, demonstrated on 15 January 2026 the autonomous inspection of offshore wind turbine blades for surface damage and potential subsurface fractures while the turbine continued operating, rather than requiring a shutdown. The capability was developed under the AQUADA-GO project, which ran from 2022 to March 2026 with a total budget of DKK 17,796,010. On this page's reading, the two deployments both move utility drone inspection from human-piloted, line-of-sight flights toward autonomous or beyond-visual-line-of-sight operation, though neither Mordor Intelligence's nor Fortune Business Insights' report names either deployment or states this shift as a market-wide trend; that reading rests on the two company sources, not on the market-research estimates.
