Drone Intelligence Assessment

DJI is the reference point every other company in this sector is measured against. Roughly 70% of the global drone market by units, an estimated 96% of detected US drone activity, and category leadership running from consumer aircraft through enterprise inspection to agricultural spraying make it less a competitor than the incumbent condition of the industry. No Western manufacturer competes with DJI on price-per-capability at volume, and the entire Blue UAS ecosystem exists, in commercial terms, because of that fact.

The US regulatory wall around the company is now structural rather than rhetorical. The FY25 NDAA gave federal agencies until 23 December 2025 to complete a security audit of DJI; none did, and the FCC added DJI to the Covered List, cutting new models off from US equipment authorisation. Three months earlier a federal court let the Pentagon's "Chinese Military Company" designation stand on narrow grounds, DJI's National Enterprise Technology Center status and the dual-use potential of its technology, even while rejecting the majority of the department's claims, including party ownership or control. The practical result is a frozen US position: the installed base flies on legally, previously authorised stock sells through, and no new DJI model enters the market while the DC Circuit appeal runs.

What the designation cannot do is remove the dependency. DJI's dominance of the detected US fleet means public-safety agencies, inspectors, and film crews still overwhelmingly operate its aircraft, and replacement at parity remains the industry's open commercial problem. For buyers the calculus is now regulatory as much as technical; for competitors, the Covered List opened the largest protected-market opportunity in the sector's history; and for DI readers the company is the single most important variable in both the China market and the Western rearmament supply chain.
