BETA Technologies took the opposite route to the passenger-first eVTOL developers. The company certifies its fixed-wing CX300 first, sells it into cargo and regional freight where the economics work at today's battery densities, and lets the vertical-lift A250 follow on the same systems pedigree. The November 2025 IPO, priced above range and raising over $1 billion, converted that strategy into the sector's strongest public-market balance sheet after Joby, with $1.48 billion of cash on hand at 30 June 2026.
The order book reads like a freight and utility roster rather than an air-taxi waiting list: UPS at 10 aircraft plus 150 options, Air New Zealand at up to 23 CX300s, Bristow at five plus 50 options, and Loganair signing a term sheet for five plus five after Scottish cargo demonstrations. Q2 2026 revenue of $14.7 million, more than double the prior-year quarter, is small but real, and it is revenue booked before type certification, from charging infrastructure, military programmes, and pre-certification work.
The charging network is the underappreciated asset. At 138 live sites with up to 250 announced, BETA is building the refuelling layer for electric aviation as a whole, and every competitor aircraft that lands on a BETA charger strengthens the platform position. The open question is certification timing: the CX300 closed its Requirements Definition phase in Q2 2026, and the company's stated path targets type certification around late 2026 to 2027. Until that lands, the investment case rests on the cargo order book converting and the infrastructure business compounding.
