OVERVIEW
A precision-guided munition is a weapon with a guidance system that steers it to its target. The two most recent market studies reviewed for this page define the category broadly. MarketsandMarkets segments it by product into tactical missiles, interceptor missiles, torpedoes, rockets and loitering munitions. SNS Insider segments it into tactical missiles, guided rockets and artillery, guided ammunition, loitering munitions, interceptor missiles and torpedoes. Both totals therefore include loitering munitions, which this site also covers on its loitering munitions market page, so the figures on the two pages should not be added together.
MarketsandMarkets, in a report published in May 2025, estimates the market at USD 37.24 billion in 2025 and projects USD 49.71 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate of 5.9 per cent. SNS Insider, in a report last updated on 1 September 2026, puts the 2026 market at USD 46.93 billion and projects USD 82.62 billion by 2035, a CAGR of 6.51 per cent. An older Research and Markets report, published in May 2024, gives USD 52.85 billion as its 2024 estimate in its summary table (its description gives 2023 for the same figure) and USD 78.95 billion by 2029. The figures are not like-for-like, but the spread is wide: the Research and Markets figure is about USD 15.6 billion higher than the MarketsandMarkets 2025 figure, and the report summaries reviewed for this page do not reconcile them. Each figure is given here with its publisher and year.
North America is the largest region in both current studies. SNS Insider puts North America's 2025 share at 38.03 per cent and names Asia Pacific as the fastest-growing region; MarketsandMarkets expects North America to account for the largest share over its forecast period. By guidance technology, SNS Insider says GPS accounts for approximately 31 per cent of the market.

MARKET STRUCTURE
Growth is not expected to be even across the category. MarketsandMarkets projects loitering munitions to grow at the highest rate of any product segment over its forecast period, and, within guided ammunition, guided artillery shells to grow fastest. SNS Insider attributes the market's growth to increasing military expenditure, advances in missile defence systems and developments in guidance technology.
MarketsandMarkets names Northrop Grumman, RTX, General Dynamics, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, MBDA, Israel Aerospace Industries, QinetiQ, Boeing and Aselsan among the leading companies. SNS Insider names Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems and General Dynamics as key players. Of these companies, only Lockheed Martin appears as its own entry on DI's drone market map, which tracks autonomous systems rather than the munitions sector as a whole; Boeing appears through its subsidiary Insitu.

2026 CONTRACT RECORD
The largest award covered on this page is for Tomahawk. Breaking Defense reported on 17 August 2026 that the US Navy had awarded Raytheon, an RTX subsidiary, a USD 22.9 billion contract to ramp up Tomahawk cruise missile production to 1,000 rounds a year. The contract follows a February framework agreement with the Pentagon. RTX said the increase will take place over a multiyear period but did not give a specific timeline.
The second is for the Army's Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). Defense News reported on 22 September 2026 that the Army had awarded Lockheed Martin a USD 1.2 billion indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract covering initial production and future orders of PrSM Increment 2. Lockheed Martin said it is expanding capacity to quadruple PrSM production. Tectonic Defense reported that the award follows the Army's request for nearly USD 2 billion to buy more PrSMs in FY27.
Defense News also reported that the US military faces a shortage of strike and air-defence missiles after expending large numbers of them in Iran, and that this reportedly includes PrSM. Our assessment: replenishing those stocks is likely to add to demand.
In Europe, the defence ministers of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom signed a letter of intent on 12 February 2026 committing to develop mechanisms for long-range one-way effectors under the European Long-range Strike Approach (ELSA), according to Defence Industry Europe. ELSA was launched in 2024. The same report lists low-cost capabilities with a range of more than 500 km, based on one-way-attack effectors, among the ELSA areas now mature enough for new European partners to join. No production contract under the letter of intent is described in that report.

TECHNOLOGY
PrSM Increment 2 is one public example of where guidance is heading. According to Defense News, it has a multimode seeker that can lock on to moving targets on land and hit ships moving at sea, giving land-based launchers a maritime strike capability. Lockheed Martin said, as quoted by Defense News in September 2026, that Increment 2 completed its first flight test in March and its second in August.
At the market level, SNS Insider puts GPS guidance at approximately 31 per cent of the market by technology, the largest of its technology segments, alongside laser guidance, infrared and radar homing. MarketsandMarkets expects guided artillery shells to be the fastest-growing part of guided ammunition.
EXPORT CONTROLS
In the United States, defence articles are controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) through the US Munitions List (USML). A State Department targeted revision of the USML took effect on 15 September 2025. According to the final rule, it removes from the USML items that no longer warrant inclusion, adds items that do, and clarifies certain entries. Compliance firm CVG Strategy expects items removed from the USML to be picked up by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security.
KEY PLAYERS
Tomahawk cruise missile. The US Navy awarded Raytheon a USD 22.9 billion contract in August 2026 to ramp Tomahawk production to 1,000 rounds a year, according to Breaking Defense. Named among the leading precision-guided munitions companies by MarketsandMarkets and SNS Insider.

DRONE INTELLIGENCE ASSESSMENT
Our assessment: the contract record is a more useful near-term signal than the top-down estimates. Two US awards disclosed in August and September 2026 total USD 24.1 billion in contract value, and both sit alongside stated production increases: Tomahawk to 1,000 rounds a year, and Lockheed Martin expanding capacity to quadruple PrSM production. RTX has said the Tomahawk ramp will run over a multiyear period without giving a timeline. With Defense News reporting a shortage of strike and air-defence missiles after US use in Iran, we read production capacity, not order intent, as the limit on how fast this demand turns into deliveries and revenue.
The three published base-year figures range from USD 37.24 billion (2025, MarketsandMarkets) to USD 52.85 billion (2024 per its summary table, Research and Markets), so the absolute size of this market is harder to pin down than its direction, which is upward in all three studies reviewed here. In Europe, the ELSA letter of intent signed in February 2026 commits six nations to develop mechanisms for long-range one-way effectors; the report on it describes no production contract. For investors and corporate-development teams, the contract-level production commitments are the figures to track.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a precision-guided munition?
A weapon with a guidance system that steers it to its target. Current market studies define the category broadly: MarketsandMarkets includes tactical missiles, interceptor missiles, torpedoes, rockets and loitering munitions, and SNS Insider lists guided rockets and artillery and guided ammunition as separate segments.
How large is the global precision-guided munitions market?
Estimates differ by publisher. MarketsandMarkets puts the market at USD 37.24 billion in 2025, rising to USD 49.71 billion by 2030 (5.9 per cent CAGR). SNS Insider puts it at USD 46.93 billion in 2026, rising to USD 82.62 billion by 2035 (6.51 per cent CAGR). An older Research and Markets report, published May 2024, gave USD 52.85 billion as its 2024 estimate.
What is driving precision-guided munitions procurement in 2026?
Two large US production contracts were announced in August and September 2026. The US Navy awarded Raytheon a USD 22.9 billion contract in August 2026 to ramp Tomahawk production to 1,000 a year, according to Breaking Defense, and the Army awarded Lockheed Martin a USD 1.2 billion PrSM Increment 2 contract in September 2026, according to Defense News, which also reported a US shortage of strike and air-defence missiles after expending large numbers in Iran.
